As its community share offer nears the finish line, Queer Spirits — the first LGBTQ+ co-operative drinks company in the world — is calling on supporters to get involved and back a movement for long-term queer empowerment.
Founded by married duo Oli Powell and Jon Gronow, Queer Spirits launched with Queer Gin and has steadily built partnerships with LGBTQ+ venues, cultural events, and independent stockists throughout the UK.
In a major shift earlier this year, the business transitioned into a fully-fledged co-operative society. The move placed ownership into the hands of its members, signalling a radical commitment to community governance and sustainability.
Now, the team is working to raise at least £100,000 to open a dedicated distillery in London. The space would serve as a production hub, trade platform, and community gathering point — furthering the brand’s mission to support and enrich queer lives through enterprise.
Investment starts from just £50, and every investor earns an equal vote and shared stake in the co-operative. Eligible participants may also receive SEIS or EIS tax relief, making this a meaningful and accessible opportunity to support queer-led growth.
At a time when queer venues are disappearing and broader support for LGBTQ+ communities is under pressure, Queer Spirits is charting a new path based on ownership, inclusivity, and long-term resilience.
“We’ve designed Queer Spirits to be different — a brand that puts people before profits and is community-first from the ground up,” said co-founder Oli Powell.
“Together, we can supercharge Queer Spirits and build spaces for our community to thrive. One day, I see our co-operative protecting queer venues under threat, or even launching new ones of our own. This is how we build infrastructure that our community truly owns.”
In line with its mission, the founders are introducing innovative ways for stakeholders to build equity. Venues and retailers will soon be able to earn shares in Queer Spirits by simply stocking its products — ensuring their business directly supports the wider LGBTQ+ economy.
Plans are also in motion for a loyalty scheme, enabling individuals to gain co-op ownership through repeat purchases. With every bottle sold, the brand aims to invest back into the community and foster economic empowerment.
The crowdfunder closes on 28 July 2025. If the minimum target is met, funds will be used to secure a production site to develop new products and scale distribution.
